Nutritional Supplements Are Vital to the Healing Process

Maintaining muscle and organ tissue is vital for normal healing, and proper nutrition plays an important role. If you don’t receive proper nutrition, your body may use your muscles for energy. Older adults may be advised to take some nutritional supplements to help protect their health and correct any vitamin or nutritional deficiencies that may hinder the healing process.

  • Protein is needed to build new skin and muscle.
  • Arginine, a building block for protein, supports blood flow and contributes to healing. Arginine-rich foods include red meat, fish, poultry, wheat germ, grains, nuts and seeds, and dairy products.
  • Vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin C, help reduce your risk of infection and promote healing.
  • Adequate fluids maintain hydration to support circulation and transport nutrients and waste.

Nutritional supplements can supply many of these healthy components when consumed with meals or between meals orally or by tube feedings. Oral supplements can be chilled, frozen into a popsicle, or blended with ice cream and fruit into a delicious and nutritious shake.

Oral and tube feeding nutrition are available at your local MSA location. Always seek medical advice before taking new supplements. A high dosage, or taking supplements for too long, may be harmful. Some supplements can also interfere with prescription medication. The Nutritionist or medical professional will evaluate the specific caloric intake for the patient and recommend the nutritional supplement. MSA will gather the needed documentation and deliver the pump, supplement and supplies, to the patient’s home.
